We Are The Dark

Because Your Eyes Open Wider At Night

» Innocence

Hello again!

I am back from England, and I’ve been thinking. While I was in England I visited the National Gallery and saw the painting Massacre of the Innocents. The painting is about a part in the Bible where the King orders for all baby boys to be killed, and I asked myself “why are they innocent?”

I determined that they are innocent because they are not sentient. They cannot think complex thoughts, which is why they follow their instincts. We then later in life teach them to think and to speak, but it is in infancy when we are in our original state of being feral.

Then I thought about the process that sentience has gotten us. We became sentient, and then through that we created the entire concept of innocence. If we hadn’t thought about it, then it wouldn’t have existed in the way it is today. So in creating the concept of innocence we have also created the concept of sin and non-innocence; and in the creating of that we have created the concepts of heaven and hell.

And although we like to think the opposite, no sentient creature is completely innocent; and so in not being innocent we give ourselves to whatever fate we have created for those who we believe to be bad or wrongful.

And although sentience isn’t all bad, and it is actually quite good, we have to keep thinking about the price we pay to be sentient.

As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts; so please write a comment.

» What There Was Before

I will be away for about a week (starting tomorrow) so I won’t be able to write anything for that time. However, I will leave you with this thought.

I am sure that you all know about the Big Bang, the beginning of the universe in which we live. And this arises the question of what was there before the Big Bang? I have thought about this for some time and I believe that I have figured out what was here before the Big Bang, and what exists beyond the edge of the universe. It is my theory that everything was here before the Big Bang, however there was no light. There was gases and everything however there was no light and as a result very low energy.

What the Big Bang was was the first strike that created an explosion that then caused a chain reaction. This chain reaction then went on to ignite stars and in effect deliver energy into the universe. This allowed for the creation of life and everything as we know it.

This has also created the edge of the universe. The edge of the universe is a ever-expanding definitive point that is expanding at the speed of light. If you were to travel higher than the speed of light in any direction you would eventually reach and pass the edge of the universe. And what would you find beyond? You would find everything that there was before the Big Bang. In effect this is Darkness, as there would be absolutely no light. It would be absolutely devoid of any light and so it would be the exact essence of Darkness.

As always I would like to hear what you have to say about this, so please leave a comment or two.

» The Clockwork Man

My first poem has been uploaded and can be found here.

The words are as follows:

Speak to me child,

Be not afraid,

Of darkness I am,

But not a dark shade,

Talk to me child,

As I’m sure you can,

Trust me child,

I’m the clockwork man,

My face may not be,

Flesh or skin,

But I’ve been,

Where nobody’s been,

And I’ll tell you the tales,

If you’ll come close to me,

I’ll show you everything,

That there is to see,

So speak to me child,

Tell me your fear,

And don’t be afraid,

When I am near,

Talk to me child,

And so join my clan,

Come to me child,

I’m the clockwork man,

Fingers so brittle,

Yet harder than steel,

An entire thought,

That runs on a wheel,

Hydraulic pumps,

Freethinking minds,

And every day,

There are new finds,

The joys of life,

The fears of death,

The beat of the heart,

The force of the breath,

Yet breath I have none,

And my heart is cold,

My mind is frigid,

And my body is old,

But speak to me child,

And I’ll listen, I will,

Through raging winters,

I feel not the chill,

I’ve so felt love,

And I’ve felt none before,

So it’s left me hungering,

For ever more,

Talk to me child,

As only you can,

And confide in me,

I’m the clockwork man,

The curse of being,

Rattles my soul,

Jams my gears,

And pops out a hole,

In cogs and springs,

Right in my chest,

Where my heart should be,

In sudden arrest,

Yet no heart is there,

No being to die,

No emotion to have,

No water to cry,

So speak to me child,

Tell me how to be,

I’ve never before,

It’s all new to me,

And talk to me child,

Tell me how I began,

And show me why,

I’m the clockwork man,

Speak to me child,

I’ve not been spoken to yet,

Save me child,

From every threat,

And love me child,

Show me how to feel,

For outside and in,

I am yet just steel,

Talk to me child,

And lift this painful ban,

Of my immortal life,

Of the clockwork man.

What this poem is talking about is how reality changes for each individual. Quoting from the film Donnie Darko, “I mean, I just don’t see the point in crying over a dead rabbit! Y’know, who… who never even feared death to begin with.” This applies to the choice that the child has, to either go towards or away from the clockwork man.

One choice would be to go towards the clockwork man, to listen to him and talk to him, and therefore make him happy. However, with an eternity to live in, how can he truly be happy? An eternity is too long to have a purpose and so why should we try to please something that is destined to be unhappy? Should we try to help the clockwork man, or should we leave him to his fate?

I would really like to hear your thoughts on this, as well as any other interpretations that you might have of the poem; so please comment.

Thank you for listening.

» An Update

I haven’t posted in a while, so I thought that I should say something. I’m going to explain something that I will be starting very soon. I write poetry, and I’ve decided to read some of it aloud and then post the videos on YouTube. This will allow me to give it the proper intonation and expression that I intend for it, while also making it available to the world.

I will be posting the words to the poems here along with links to the videos. I should have a video up fairly soon, so keep looking on the site.

I’ll make sure that my first poem is something “Delectably Dark” as I like to call it.

» When Nobody’s Watching

» Posted by Summer, » Filed under dark philosophy on June 12, 2008

I came across an interesting quote today, and it reads as follows.

“Character is what you are in the dark when no one else is around”.

I found this very interesting, especially the truth in it. Is it not true that we act a certain way around people? Is it not true that we change who we truly are to be socially acceptable or to cater to the amusement of others? And if so, then who are we really? It is truly only when nobody is around that we can see ourselves.

It’s only when nobody is looking that you can finally talk out loud to yourself and not be accused of insanity. When nobody is looking we can do whatever strange or absurd things we wish. We can climb up our stairs like a clambering monkey or crawl to the basement on our stomachs. We can run in circles until we’re dizzy and whisper poems to the wind. When nobody is looking we can be who we truly are.

But the problem, as with all things, is that there must be people. We are empty without witnesses and friends to dance with us or talk with us. It is our nature to be social; and so it is our conflicting nature to have to disguise ourselves to be accepted. Until we can find someone as different as us we can’t be ourselves. And when we do we find joy beyond imagination.

This is what living should be. Being with people who are willing to do what you will do, accept you for who you are. Living is finding people who accept the core of your being, the raw existence of your soul, and the acts and thoughts flowing out of you.

And it is in the dark, when nobody is watching or judging us, that we can be who we are.

» Mirrors

I once had a revelation while looking in the mirror. I suddenly realized it, and reached up to touch my face. I felt it; I felt my fingers poking into the flesh on my cheek. But what I didn’t feel is what was happening on the other side of the mirror. There was someone who looked like me, doing the same thing as me; poking the tips of their fingers into their cheek. But I couldn’t feel them. I wasn’t them, and I realized it then. You are only you, not the person in the mirror or reflection. There is only one of you. But then; who is in the mirror?

I am saying this because now every time I turn on my television it takes a while to start. In that while there is a black mirror in the place of the screen in which I see someone. They sit on the couch like me, they look like me, if I move they move with me; but I know they aren’t me. The black mirror makes everything sinister, and the long shadows are emphasized so that most of the face is blocked out. Two dark holes look at me from the other side, and I feel my heartbeat quickening. It’s not me. I try to stay still, as if it is that if I move the figure on the other side will get up and try to grab me. I stay still as a statue, and then the static turns on and the person is swept away by its crackling sedative.

» Why The Dark?

» Posted by Summer, » Filed under Introductions and Explanations on May 31, 2008

Why the dark? Why do we choose to preside in shadows? It is because in the dark, nothing as we know it is true. The dark is ironically a place of enlightenment; a place of learning through yourself. We act as though the light is the true path of learning. But it is in the dark that our eyes open ever wider. It is not in the blinding light, but in the shadows that we can see around us.

We choose to preside in darkness because it is in darkness where all are equal. Everyone is the same size, the same shape, the same face. Everyone’s words are taken equally, there is no fighting over who has the credentials or experience; you can finally just go with what makes sense to you. To you. It is your world at last. In the dark your imagination can bend things, you can choose what is real, you can decide what you want to listen to; but only in the dark. In the light everything is defined. A shadow is the shadow of a table; a chair is still just a chair. But it is in the dark where the shadow is the shadow of a creature, and the chair is in fact a throne. And in the dark the chair is a throne for you.

We choose darkness because it allows us to be ourselves. When faces have no meaning and everything fades to voices, it is then that you can be who you always wanted to be. You can act crazy, you can act mild, you can act average, but in the darkness everything is the same. You can finally say what you feel without fear of being ridiculed. You can finally be who you are without fear of being left alone. It is in the darkness that we are who we are. Not in the shining light, not in definition; but in the dark. In our minds.

Many people think darkness is evil; but this is not true. They think this because they are afraid of what could happen in the dark. They are afraid of what it holds and the possibilities it contains. Evil can exist in the darkness, that is true, but it also exists equally in the light. It is simply that things appear differently in the darkness. Things appear to be more frightening, more brooding and thicker. Words begin to slide slowly as they are said and messages take on many interpretations. But the words are not bladed, they are not intended to harm or hurt. They are simply coated with emotion, painted with thoughts. It is different that what occurs in the light; and for fear of the different, people have confused it with evil.

These are the reasons we have chosen to be in the dark. It is not because we intend to harm or hurt. It is not because we are afraid of the light. It is because we see that it is where we can find ourselves. It is a place of enlightenment and endarkment, a place of infinite possibility, and a place where we can finally be. Not being anything, not being anyone, just being. It is in the darkness where we are, by choice ; and it is in the darkness where we will choose to stay.

Hello. Good evening.

If you are reading this then there is a large chance that you have landed on my site and are wondering who I am. You may call me Summer, and this is my blog. What I will be talking about here is something which I like to call “Dark Philosophy”. The only way I can really describe it is as speculation. However, speculation as one word doesn’t quite sum up what Dark Philosophy is; but I’m sure that as you read my later posts you will soon understand all about it.

I hope you will let me know your thoughts on my posts; and after you figure out how it works maybe you can even try some Dark Philosophy yourself.

Good Night.
